CHAPTER NINE

Poe

“Wake up.” Phin shook me suddenly, and I jolted.

“What is it?”

“Lex Talionis responded to the party invite.”

I wasn’t sure if it was the fogginess of sleep, but Phin’s expression was full of fear and I couldn’t understand how an RSVP could terrify someone unless…

“How’d they respond?”

He gestured for me to follow him and handed me my robe. Quickly, I got out of bed and put it on, tying it securely around myself, and walked with Phin to the living room.

Donny stood there holding a newspaper…People still read those?

“Let me see.” I held out my hand. On the front of the paper was a photo of a covered body in the street outside my gallery. Scanning the article, I saw what Phin was referring to.

A message was spray-painted on the window of the gallery simply reading: We will be there. According to the article, it was unclear to authorities what the message was referring to.

“Who’s the victim?” I glared at the picture—the body was slight, and with it covered, I couldn’t tell.

“A woman. We’re waiting on more details,” Donny said with a sigh. “And yes, we’re sure it’s Lex Talionis.”

“We haven’t had a murder here in a while, Donny, and their message comes with perfect timing. I want to know who the woman is.”

“Poe, you know at some point today, the cops are going to want to talk to you. The body was outside your gallery.” Phin handed me a mug of coffee, and I handed Donny the paper and took the cup.

“They’re obviously in no rush if the paper was able to print that before they even came knocking.”

“Do you think maybe they suspect it’s one of us doing this, and they’re getting ready to make an arrest?” Phin sat on the couch, concern adorning his handsome face.

“We’d know if they were, Phin. My connections within the police force would inform me if an arrest was imminent.”

“I’m heading back. If you hear anything, let Christopher know.” Donny left without another word, and I sat beside Phin.

“Maybe you shouldn’t come to the masquerade.”

Phin turned his head so fast, I thought he’d get whiplash. “Do you honestly think I’d let you go on your own?”

“Phin, we don’t both need to be there.”

“I’m going. Don’t try to argue with me. I’ve made my decision.”

“I wouldn’t dare, my love.” I leaned against him, content when he wrapped his arm around me.

“We’re in this life together, always.”

I squeezed his hand and kept my worried thoughts to myself. If anything happened to Phin and he was taken from me again, I’d burn the world to ash. I’d give Lex Talionis a taste of their own medicine.
